We worked hard to lobby the Wake County Board of Elections about the huge lines and major problems at the Breckenridge Club House in Morrisville, North Carolina (Precinct 05-07) and they finally approved a new location! The new voting location for the Breckenridge precinct will be Parkside Elementary School.
The Board approved polling place changes in seven other locations in the 16th Senate District and two other nearby locations worth noting. See below for more information on the other locations.
The Breckenridge precinct was a poor choice for one of the largest voting precincts in Wake County. In November we saw lines that took hours for many. Parking was terrible and many had to wait in the dark to finally cast their ballot. The space just simply wasn’t big enough and we need to fix these problems ahead of a massive turnout in 2020.
We will continue to advocate for more early voting locations in Western Wake. More options for early voting is a great way to limit wait times on Election Day. We also continue to advocate for more funding to split the Breckenridge and Brier Creek precincts into two separate precincts. Voters also have the option to request an absentee ballot to vote by mail ahead of Election Day.
I see access to the ballot as a major issue in North Carolina. As someone who worked for Al Gore in 2000 and was part of the Florida recount I can tell you that every vote matters. If the Presidential Election comes down to North Carolina’s 15 Electoral Votes it could be just a few hundreds votes that could send Donald Trump packing. In 2020 we need to ensure that everyone has access to the ballot and that we make it as easy as possible to vote on Election Day (or prior to Election Day by mail or at an early vote location).
