Office of Senator Wiley Nickel
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 25th, 2019
Senator Nickel Opposed to Continued Attacks by Trump Administration on Immigrant and Minority Communities. Speaks out against “Acting” Trump Administration Officials Visit to North Carolina
Raleigh, NC – Speaker of the North Carolina House, Tim Moore announced a round table with Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad F. Wolf, Acting Director of ICE Matthew Albence, Members of Congress, State Lawmakers, and Lt. Governor Dan Forest. Senator Wiley Nickel was not invited to attend nor were representatives of immigrant advocacy groups in the state.
Senator Nickel said, “The Trump Presidency is a cancer on our democracy. HB 370 and the visit by the ‘Acting’ DHS Secretary and ‘Acting’ Director of ICE show that this cancer is spreading to the North Carolina General Assembly. This bill takes a page from the Trump playbook and would remove Sheriffs from office who are doing all they can to ensure the safety of their communities. House Bill 370 is totally unnecessary, diverts local resources, diminishes sheriffs’ autonomy and makes our communities less safe.”
Earlier this year, Senator Nickel helped organize a Press Conference with Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden and Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller who are all opposed to this bill.
Senator Nickel said, “The public is safer without this bill. House Bill 370 would make immigrant communities less likely to call law enforcement to report crimes or seek help.”
Senator Nickel added, “We need comprehensive immigration reform but instead of addressing the issue this Administration seeks only to divide our country. The Trump Administration has stolen close to $80 Million from North Carolina Military bases to pay for a border wall that we don’t need and that he said Mexico would pay for. Instead of trying to remove Sheriffs from office who are simply trying to do their job, we should be focused on protecting our immigrant communities and providing a safe and legal path to citizenship.”
