Senator Wiley Nickel Opposes Latest Round of Republican Gerrymandering in the North Carolina General Assembly

The courts struck down the Republican Gerrymandered maps for the North Carolina General Assembly.  The Legislature was ordered to draw new maps for most seats in the State House and State Senate.  Senator Nickel voted against the maps produced by Legislative Republicans for the Senate maps and the House maps. The Governor is not allowed to veto legislative maps in North Carolina and the courts accepted the changes.  We replaced one set of gerrymandered maps for another. We shouldn’t be drawing “Republican Maps” nor should we be drawing “Democrat Maps.” We should be drawing Fair Maps.

The only real solution is a non-partisan independent redistricting commission that gets politicians out of the process.
