FORMER OBAMA STAFFER WILL RUN FOR NEW WAKE COUNTY SENATE DISTRICT: WILEY NICKEL ANNOUNCES HE WILL RUN IN THE NEWLY CREATED 16TH SENATE DISTRICT
Cary, NC: Tuesday, Wiley Nickel, a candidate for the NC Senate, announced in a video to his supporters on social media that he intends on running in the newly created North Carolina Senate District 16 when the current maps are finalized. Nickel said “for too long, the Republicans in the Senate have put political partisanship above North Carolina families. I’m running for the Senate because it’s time for our legislators to solve problems instead of passing an extreme partisan agenda.”
This announcement comes after federal judges appointed a special master to redraw two state senate districts and seven state house districts. When the new maps are finalized there will be a new state Senate district in Wake County. The newly created Senate district will represent Cary, Morrisville, and parts of North Raleigh and will not have an incumbent state senator for the 2018 state elections.
Nickel cited laws like HB2, cuts to public education, recent tax breaks for corporations and increased taxes on middle-class families as reasons for why he is running for the Senate. Nickel said, “that’s wrong and I will bring a new set of priorities to the NC Senate.” Nickel said “I’m running for the legislature because it is time to focus on strengthening our schools, creating high paying jobs, expanding access to affordable healthcare and protecting our state’s natural resources. Governor Roy Cooper has laid out a positive agenda for our state’s future but is faced with a Republican supermajority in the General Assembly who are fighting him at every turn. He needs our help and I’m ready to join the fight to clean up Raleigh.”
Speaking to his supporters, Nickel said, “I have seen firsthand the positive effect public service can have on our nation, our state and our community. I will bring the best of my years of service in the Obama White House, public involvement and small business experience to the fight for a better North Carolina.”
Wiley Nickel is a long-time resident of Cary where he lives with his wife, Caroline, and their two children. Nickel is a local attorney and small business owner. The Law Offices of Wiley Nickel, PLLC is based in Cary.
